Temperatures exceed 40º

by DestinationTenerife

Temperatures topped 40ºC in many parts of the Canaries at the week-end as the mass of hot air from the Saharan Desert covered the region for a third day.

Despite Met Office forecasts of maximum temperatures in the low 30s, weather stations recorded much higher figures on Saturday and Sunday. The clock on the seafront at Las Canteras registered 40ºC for most of Sunday afternoon. The dust cloud, which was clearly visible in satellite pictures of the Canaries yesterday, partly lifted last night but is expected to continue fo the next day or two.

But when it comes to exploring on foot, there are still multitudinous places I have yet to discover and if I continue to use walking maps and guides produced by staff working in the local tourism office of a municipality who have clearly never walked further than the distance from their car to the office, it may at best be many years before I can truly say I’ve walked Tenerife. At worst, I may not survive to ever make that statement.

Loro Parque featured in Times Online

by DestinationTenerife

Tenerife has the problem normally associated with the pop duo Wham! For some people it seems just so 1983. It has appeared, not unlike George Michael, to be still around, but it isn't what it used to be.

Which is harsh, at least for the north of the island. Rarely can so small a place be so dramatically divided in culture and style. The south of Tenerife, invariably the drier part, does still have a sense of the early Eighties about it. The northern section, on the other hand, has refocused on the family market, but with an emphasis on environmentalism.

The art of relaxing in Tenerife

by DestinationTenerife

MENTION TENERIFE to many people and images are instantly conjured up of Brits abroad, scorching themselves on the beaches or drinking themselves into oblivion. The reality, though, is that even in the island's rowdier southern resorts, the worst excesses have been curbed of late and in its capital of Santa Cruz, and in the north, the Spanish island can deservedly boast of being an appealing city-break destination.
