Transport in Tenerife

However, the public transport system on the Island is very good and there is a wide range of routes. Many of the excursions in Tenerife that you may go on offer coach services from your hotel or from popular pick up points, that can be booked at your hotel or at the wide variety of excursion shops spread throughout the Island.
Car Hire
Car hire in Tenerife is a very competitive market so it is always advisable to shop around. There are also many car hire companies on the internet so that you can either reserve a car or get an idea of prices before you leave.
To hire a car you will need to show your passport and also your UK driving license.
The minimum rental age is 21 years old, and some are as high as 25.
Make sure that you check all of the insurance details that are included in the price, as some firms offer full insurance, whilst others include no insurance in the price, and so if you have an accident you will be left with a hefty bill.
Some firms ask for a security deposit also, whilst others do not require any deposit whatsoever.
Bicycles
There are also some bicycle hire companies in Tenerife, where you can rent mountain bikes, scooters, moped and motorcycles.
The minimum age for rental is usually 18 years of age for any motorized bikes.
Taxis
Most taxi drivers in Tenerife are honest and helpful, but watch out for the occasional rogue. There will not be a huge price difference for a short journey, but if you are taking a long trip, it is sometimes better to ask for a rough idea of the price before you agree to take the taxi. Some taxi drivers can be bargained with in the same way that you can do in a shop.
Most of the taxi drivers in the tourist areas of the Island speak fairly fluent English, and should have no trouble understanding your instructions.
Taxis can also be hired for excursions, whereby you can ask the driver to take you to an attraction and wait for you to take you back to your hotel afterwards.
Buses
The bus service in Tenerife is fairly regular and you can pick up a timetable at most bus stations and some hotels.
Prices are very fair, and you can also purchase a bus card (called a bono card) which allows you discounts on all of your bus fares. Once you have bought a card, you simply tell the bus driver your destination and then insert your card into the machine next to the driver, and the fee for the journey will be deducted from the value of your card.
